This week in class we had a big focus on developing our short division skills in the written method. At first we represented any remainders or left overs as simply that, a remainder as a whole number. Once we mastered that we looked at how we can be more accurate by continuing to share and divide what is left over. The result was a decimal fraction or at times, a common fraction. We extended our understanding by analysing different word problems and justifying how we wanted to represent the remainder. We came to the conclusion that problems that involved money and elements of time and measurement a decimal fraction was appropriate whereas, problems involving physical objects like pizza or people we can represent remainders as a common fraction or a whole number.

This week saw the culmination of our inquiry into migration. The children worked in groups across the year level last week to first choose a migration story from history or an example from today. They explored the topic through the concepts of causation, change and perspective. The children presented their findings in the form of a news report or documentary piece with fellow students as their audience. The task involved a number of ATL’s (approaches to learning) in the form of communication skills, social skills, self=management skills and research skills.
This week we began looking at report writing. We started by pulling apart the structure of an existing report on whales. The focus was targeting how paragraphs are written in an information report. The children discovered how each paragraph is dedicated to one particular subject of the main topic and each paragraph begins with a topic sentence that acts as an introduction to that subject. Each paragraph contains a variety of topic specific words that inform the reader.
We used these ideas to help understand the best way to read a non-fiction piece of writing. It isn’t necessary to read the whole article but reading the first sentence of each paragraph helps us to scan for information.
Over the next few weeks the children will be exploring the different migration stories around the world currently and historically and working towards researching and writing a report on one of their choosing.
At first there were looks of despair and cries of ‘no way, it’s impossible!’ but some persistence and patience kicked in and a large handful of students climbed the puzzle mountain today and successfully completed today’s challenge. Well done!
This week we furthered explored the concepts in our central idea, Human migration can cause global changes that provide opportunities. We first looked at what we already know….the children wrote their understandings of migration:

Over the last week we have continued to explore the concept of measurement. Our focus has been working towards understanding the concepts of perimeter and area, namely of rectangles and triangles. After establishing formulas for the rectangle:
Perimeter of Rect = (Length + Width) x 2 or simply add up all the sides..:)
Area of Rect = Length x Width…..L x W
We then discovered a connection between the triangle and the rectangle. The area of a triangle is half of the rectangle it can sit in. The children then discussed the formula must be the same as the rectangle but halved…we simply changed L for B (base) and W for H (height) soooo..
Area of Triangle = Base x Height / 2 or ……b x h / 2
Some of the children are reinforcing these formulas and concepts by working their way through some skill based exercises while some students are beginning to use these understandings and applying them to more complex problems, shown below.
