HWOO- How We Organise Ourselves

HWOO- How We Organise Ourselves

Our next Unit of Inquiry is How We Organise Ourselves. In this UOI the students will be inquiring into this Central Idea: Political systems structure how nations are organised and affect people’s rights and responsibilities.

Our Tuning In Activity was a tent building activity where the students were told to build a tent that could fit a person. It was really interesting to observe how different leadership skills emerged from this activity. Here are some pictures from this activity.

Puzzle Friday!

Puzzle Friday!

Before lunch on Fridays is our Puzzle time with 5TB.

At first there were looks of despair and cries of ‘no way, it’s impossible!’ but some persistence and patience kicked in and a large handful of students climbed the puzzle mountain today and successfully completed today’s challenge. Well done!

Report Writing Exercise

Report Writing Exercise

This week we began looking at report writing. We started by pulling apart the structure of an existing report on whales. The focus was targeting how paragraphs are written in an information report. The children discovered how each paragraph is dedicated to one particular subject of the main topic and each paragraph begins with a topic sentence that acts as an introduction to that subject. Each paragraph contains a variety of topic specific words that inform the reader.

We used these ideas to help understand the best way to read a non-fiction piece of writing. It isn’t necessary to read the whole article but reading the first sentence of each paragraph helps us to scan for information.

Over the next few weeks the children will be exploring the different migration stories around the world currently and historically and working towards researching and writing a report on one of their choosing.

What a Week!

What a Week!

It has been a busy week for us in Grade 5 starting with the excursion to the Shanghai Jewish Settlers’ Museum and ending with an awesome Book week. Here are some pictures from our trip to Shanghai.

Book Week

It’s always exciting to dress up in a character outfit. The students were dressed in various costumes and enjoyed doing the Book Character hunt in elementary school. Here are some pics from today.

Welcome to our Blogfolio Page

Dear Parents and Guardians

This is our Grade 5KN Blogfolio page. We will use this page to share our learning and important  messages.

We are now into the 5th week of school and a lot of learning has been happening in our class. We share our learning space with 5TB as we are a pod. The students in our classes are encouraged to work with someone different all the time. This is to help in developing their Approaches to Learning skills and the IB attributes.

We request that you sign up for our blog page so that you can also share in what goes on in our classes. Here are a few pictures from our past weeks of learning.
