This week – Sports Day Information and Library Day change

Hello All,

Just a reminder that we have our Elementary Sports Day on Friday.  I hope you have all received the information sent out to parents from the school.  I have just attached it here in case you missed it.

Also please note that due to this event on Friday, we have changed our Library Day for 1HN for tomorrow.  Please remind your child to bring their library books tomorrow.

We are also having our Earth Hour event in the morning, which the students are very excited about.

Stay tuned for further updates about our class activities recently.

Kind Regards,

Miss Hayley

Animal Experts in 1HN

Animal Experts in 1HN

We set a challenge for our students this week to become experts in one animal classification group.  They headed off to an expert classroom to learn all about a certain group of the animal kingdom, such as; fish, mammals, reptiles, birds etc.   They then had to come back and share their knowledge with other students from 1HN.  Everyone did a great job of presenting and sharing their information and I think you will agree the end Information Posters look terrific.  Well done 1HN

Learning to Glaze

Learning to Glaze

Grade 1 students have been investigating 3 types of cultural arts while practicing 3 different clay skills. They have learned how to make a pinch pot while being inspired by Oaxacan Animals, they practiced creating different types of coils to create a pot or vase inspired by Chinese Porcelain and they have just finished up creating African inspired masks while rolling slabs out of clay.

Now that their clay projects are complete and have come out of the kiln, they are ready to be colored with glaze! Grade 1 students are practicing finding their correct colors on the glaze chart and adding glaze to their final creations. Make sure to keep checking the blog to see how amazing their final works will be once their glazing is complete!

1HN – Our Year so far movie clip

1HN – Our Year so far movie clip

Hello All,

Here is the movie we made for our Assembly back at the end of  January.  I finally learned how to shrink and share clips to a size to fit on the blog…. sorry it has taken a while!  Really putting into the action the idea of ‘Life Long Learners’.        If you were not able to make the Assembly, we shared this on the day about our year so far in 1HN.  (We have since had a new class member join us, so apologies that he is not featured.)

Now, I just have to put on the actual performance of our Three Little Pig play from 2 Perspectives.

That will be coming soon.

Hope you enjoy it.

Sports Day is coming soon!!!!

Sports Day is coming soon!!!!

March 29th is the Grade 1 to 5 sports day, we will begin preparing students for this during PE class over the next 3 weeks – some classes have already started.

The focus of this day is Healthy Competition.

Using the PSPE framework of Identity, Active Living, and Interactions we can explain the day like this –

§  Students will identify within their house group whilst competing in Active athletic events of entailing Running, jumping, and throwing, all the while Interacting and participating within the whole sports day.

One thing we would like to establish with all students is that whilst we can’t all be Usain Bolt we can all improve our speed by focusing on our technique. Attached to this blog post are some very broad tips for running faster – we will be exploring these more in class during the next few weeks.

Minute Madness today

Minute Madness today

We had a noisy maths class today as we were inquiring into how long is a minute and what can you really do in a minute.  There were lots of ideas to start with, but after completing a few rounds we realized that a minute can sometimes seem longer than think and shorter than you think.  It can depend on what you have to do!  It was a busy, fun time watching students really engaged in timing themselves.

We have been learning all about time for the last two weeks, starting with Days of the Week, then Calendars, then different types of clocks and how to tell the time to the half hour on an analogue clock.  It has been a lot of fun.

Challenge your child to tell the time on an analogue clock to you for an hour or half hour time.

March Home Learning – Update

March Home Learning – Update

Hello All,

On Friday I sent home March Home Learning Grids with students who had their books in class.  After reviewing this I realized that many of the activities were cross overs from the grid for the CNY Holiday Grid that some students in 1HN completed a lot of.

Therefore, I have created a revised grid with some new tasks.   I will have printed copies available for the students tomorrow, but am posting it here as well.
